Upcycling atelier at GO! Campus Nexus DUO

At GO! Campus Nexus DUO (Belgium), an upcycling atelier showed how circular thinking can go far beyond recycling materials. What started as a small initiative to give discarded materials a second life through thoughtfully designed, functional and attractiveproducts gradually evolved into a thriving social enterprise, driven by students’ creativity, initiative and commitment.

Working closely with material suppliers, local businesses, clients and community organisations, students learned how circular economy principles can be applied in real-life contexts. Recovered materials were transformed into innovative products ranging from conversation benches and multifunctional coat racks to a disused caravan that was converted into a food truck. Through the design and production process, students developed practical skills while gaining experience in collaboration, entrepreneurship and sustainable innovation.

The project quickly expanded beyond the atelier itself. Students actively contributed their own ideas, identified new material streams and took increasing ownership of the initiative. Their enthusiasm was such that some expressed a desire to remain involved even after graduation.

The workshop also became a catalyst for new connections within the local community. Neighbours, organisations and businesses discovered the atelier and spontaneous collaborations emerged, creating opportunities for students to showcase their work and respond to genuine community needs. Particular attention was given to youth organisations and services working with young people, ensuring that the projects had a meaningful social impact.

Beyond creating upcycled products, the overarching goal was to inspire and empower young people, showing how creativity and entrepreneurship can contribute to a more sustainable society.

“We learned that with creativity and teamwork, nothing has to go to waste.”
