Outdoor classroom at Atheneum GO! Erasmus
Bringing learning outdoors through design, craftsmanship and community.
BELGIUM
At Atheneum GO! Erasmus (Belgium), the creation of an outdoor classroom became a powerful example of learning beyond the traditional classroom. Developed through the joint efforts of students, teachers and parents, the project transformed part of the school grounds into an inspiring educational space where learning, nature and community come together.
Students played a central role throughout the process. Working under professional guidance, they contributed to the design, construction and installation of the wooden outdoor classroom, a so-called theatron. This hands-on involvement allowed them to apply technical skills in a real-world context while developing a strong sense of ownership and pride in the final result.
Today, the outdoor classroom offers teachers from different subjects the opportunity to bring their lessons outside. The unique setting encourages active learning and provides students with a fresh perspective on their surroundings. Whether used for discussions, presentations or creative activities, the space supports a more varied and engaging learning experience.
More than a new piece of infrastructure, the outdoor classroom reflects a shared vision of education that values participation, wellbeing and a strong connection to place. By involving the wider school community in every stage of its development, the project created a lasting resource that will continue to support learning and engagement for years to come.
The project also became a catalyst for wider greening initiatives across the school grounds. Fruit trees were planted, green borders with perennial plants and flower bulbs were established, and additional opportunities for biodiversity were created throughout the site. Over time, these interventions will contribute to a gradual transformation of the playground into a greener, more permeable and nature-rich environment.
Professional landscape architects translated the ideas and wishes of the students into a coherent long-term design, ensuring that the young people’s vision remains at the heart of the school’s future development. It is an exciting transformation that students and staff look forward to seeing unfold in the years ahead.
“We designed and built a place that helps bring lessons to life.”
